RBI to put off Lending and Expansion restriction on PNB
The apex bank of the country, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to defer putting lending and expansion restrictions on the fraud-hit Punjab National Bank till the results of first-quarter of 2018-19 are out. The regulator will take a call once the June quarter results are declared. Also, the PNB has been asked to improve its recovery process and focus largely on reducing its expenditure till then.
A MoU agreement has been signed with YES Bank and SIDBI to provide loans to SME’s and MSME’s
YES Bank and SIDBI have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to channelise various banking solutions to SMEs. Here the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) will act as a preferred financial institution for giving loans to the small and medium enterprising customers.
HDFC Champions in Payment security
HDFC Bank has been recognized with the Champion Security Award at the 14th Visa Asia Pacific Security Summit. This award signifies the bank’s leadership excellence in risk management and payment security performance. This is the second time in a row where HDFC Bank won this award for the same category in India and South Asia Category.

Former Chief Justice Nasir Ul Mulk to be the interim Prime Minister
The former Chief Justice Nasir Ul Mulk has been appointed as the interim Prime Minister of Pakistan until general elections are held on July 25th, 2018. Previously, Nasir Ul Mulk had served as the interim chief of Election Commission of Pakistan. The interim administration as a practice does not delve into administering major decisions until the new government is elected.
Spain’s new Prime Minister: Pedro Sanchez
King Felipe VI of Spain announced the renowned socialist leader Pedro Sanchez as Spain’s Prime Minister. Mr Sanchez is Spain’s seventh Prime Minister since the return to democracy following the death of dictator Gen. Francisco Franco in 1975.
Giuseppe Conte was sworn in as the new PM of Italy
Giuseppe Conte, the prime minister for the government of the Five Star Movement-League coalition, has taken his oath of office. Conte will head a government of ministers from the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S) and the far-right League Party
Scientists discover new chemical element with magnetic properties
Scientists have discovered the chemical element Ruthenium (Ru) as the fourth single element to have unique magnetic properties at room temperature. This means the element can be used to improve sensors, devices in the computer memory and logic industry. Until today Cobalt, Nickel and Iron were the only 3 elements identified to have magnetic properties at room temperature.
31st May Observed as the ‘World No Tobacco Day’
The World Health Organisation(WHO) has designated 31st May of each year as the World No Tobacco Day. The world observed the World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) with a intent of encouraging a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. This year’s theme is “Tobacco and heart disease”.
The U.S. renames its Pacific Command
The United States has officially renamed its strategically important Pacific Command (PACOM) to U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. This renaming also signifies the increasing relevance of Indian military for the US. The ceremony witnessed representatives from Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, India, New Zealand, Canada, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Brunei, and Nepal.
Egypt President swore in for the 2nd term in office
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi of Egypt was sworn in for a second four-year term in office. in 2014, Sisi ousted Egypt’s first freely elected president Mohamed Morsi and won his first term in 2014 with an overwhelming majority of the vote. This year Sisi on 97% of valid votes in the March presidential election.
Kendrick Lamar Gets His Pulitzer Prize for the album ‘DAMN’
For the first time in history, a nonclassical or jazz musician wins the Pulitzer for music. Kendrick Lamar received the Pulitzer Prize for his 2017 album “DAMN”. He had notched four Grammys including best rap album this year for “DAMN”
The Pakistan Sindh Province passes Historic Bill
The Pakistan Sindh province passed a landmark Bill allowing Hindu widows to remarry. Hindu widows cab now remarry out of their own free will but only after a period of six months has lapsed after their husband’s death. The bill also grants Hindu women the right to file a petition for dissolution of a marriage if they want to terminate their marriage
India’s longest freight corridor: Uttar Pradesh – Mumbai
India’s longest freight corridor connecting Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai is set to be inaugurated on August 15, 2018. This is at its first phases and the information was disclosed by the chairman of the Railway Board Ashwani Lohani, who inspected the 190 km-long Ateli-Phulera section of the dedicated railway freight corridor between Dadri in UP and Mumbai.
Tripura govt aims to phase out plastic carry bags
The Tripura government has set August 15 as the deadline to phase out plastic carry bags. The government, as part of the ‘Himalayan Cleanup’ programme, urged people to replace their plastic bags with biodegradable ones. The Himalayan Cleanup campaign has been launched by a Delhi-based organization in 12 mountain states in the country to end plastic pollution in the hilly areas.
India launches its second IT Pass way in China
With an aim to cash in on the booming Chinese software market, India launches its second IT corridor in China through a digital collaborative known as the SIDCOP platform in China’s Guiyang. India’s first IT hub in China with the similar SIDCOP platform was established in December 2018 at the Chinese port city of Dalian.
BCCI and UN Environment sign agreement got Green Cricket
The BCCI and UN Environment have signed an agreement to agree on terms to promote ‘green’ Cricket in India. The partnership focuses on spreading greater awareness about key environmental challenges the country faces, and highlight alternate and more sustainable solutions. The partnership will also aim to phase out single-use plastic across stadiums in the country
Indian Meteorological Department teams up with BSNL For Weather Warnings
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has teamed up with an objective to send out extreme weather warning to people. The alerts will be about impending extreme weather conditions such as storms and heatwave. The exercise is being carried out in an experimental stage, and if successful the plan is to rope in other weather agencies.
Air India Express and IndiGo among lowest cost worldwide
Air India’s low-cost international arm Air India Express and budget carrier IndiGo are among the top five lowest cost airlines in the world, according to Melbourne-based travel planning site Rome2rio. India ranks fourth among 46 countries with lowest average airfares. The study ranks 200 airlines in the world on the basis of average price per kilometer.
Kamaljit Bawa is the first Indian to receive Linnean Medal
.Kamaljit Bawa is the 1st Indian to win the Linnean Medal from Linnean Society of London ever since it was constituted in 1888. He was recognized for his pioneering research on the evolution of tropical plants, tropical deforestation & non-timber forest products. Linnean Medal is awarded to a biologist every year by the Linnean Society of London.
India’s first thermal power plant in Odisha
India’s first-ever thermal power plant will be developed by Coal India Ltd (CIL) in Odisha. CIL’s subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) will be used to implement this project. The power plant, which will have a capacity of 1,600 MW, will come up at Sundergarh district. NTPC Ltd will be a joint venture partner and will likely have a 49 percent stake.
‘Santokbaa Humanitarian’ awarded to two renowned Indians
Child rights activist and Noble Laureate Kailash Satyarthi and space scientist A S Kiran Kumar, Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), were given ‘Santokbaa Humanitarian Award’. The award was presented by the President of India. The award is instituted by Shree Ramkrishna Knowledge Foundation (SRKKF).
Pankaj Saran appointed as the new Deputy NSA
India’s envoy to Russia Pankaj Saran has been appointed as the Deputy National Security Advisor. He served twice in the Prime Minister’s Office – First as Deputy Secretary during 1995 and 1999, and then as the Joint Secretary between 2007 and 2012. He had held various positions in India & abroad including country’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh. Ajit Doval is the National Security Adviser.
Justice R K Agrawal appointed as the NCDRC president
Justice R K Agrawal has been appointed as the next President of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. Justice Agrawal will take over from Justice DK Jain who retires on May 31, 2018. The NCDRC, which deals with consumer rights and addresses their disputes and grievances, is a quasi-judicial commission set up in 1988 under the Consumer Protection Act of 1986.
Andhra Pradesh gets new state bird & flower
Four years after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the government of the residual state has announced its state symbols. Andhra Pradesh government has decided to notify ‘Rose-ringed parakeet’ popularly known as ‘Rama Chiluka’, as the state bird. The ‘Neem’ is the official tree of the Andhra Pradesh. The blackbuck is the animal while Jasmine as its state flower. Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated to create Telangana in June 2014.
Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, new Northern Army Commander
Lt Gen Ranbir Singh has been appointed as the new Northern Army commander. Lt Gen Singh succeeds Lt Gen Anbu who has been appointed as the Vice-Chief of the Indian Army. Lt Gen Ranbir Singh was the Director-General of Military Operations (DGMO) when India carried out surgical strikes across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.
Kerala cartoonist bags an International award
Kerala cartoonist Thomas Antony has won an international award, in the best caricature category. Antony, currently working as Executive Artist of Malayalam daily ‘Metro Vaartha’, is among the nine winners at the 13th edition of the World Press Cartoon awards. The awards are given to the best works published in 2017 in newspapers and magazines from around the world.
Indian Institute of Science (IISc) makes it to top 100
Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru has made it to the top 100 universities in the Times Higher Education’s World Reputation Rankings 2018. Ranked in the 91-100 band, it is the only Indian institution to make it to the prestigious list this year. The list topped by American universities Harvard, MIT & Stanford, with the United Kingdom’s Cambridge & Oxford completing the top 5.

Microsoft grows to become the third most valuable firm
Microsoft has surpassed Alphabet, in the market capitalisation for the first time in 3 years, becoming the 3rd most valuable firm after Apple & Amazon globally. On May 29, 2018, Microsoft reportedly had a market cap of $753 billion at the close of trading, almost $14 billion ahead of Alphabet. Apple leads with a market cap of $924 billion & Amazon is at second spot with nearly $783 billion.
MD Mallya appointed as the independent director
ICICI Bank has appointed MD Mallya as an additional independent director on the board. Mallya in the past has served as the managing director & chairman of Bank of Baroda. Mallya’s tenure is for a period of 5 years, it is subjected to the approval of shareholders. Mallya was also engaged extensively with the government as Indian Banks’ Association chairman.
SoftBank Vision Fund’s CEO Rajeev Misra promoted to Executive Vice President of SoftBank’s board
SoftBank Vision Fund’s CEO Rajeev Misra has been elevated to Executive Vice President of SoftBank’s board. He is also likely to be considered as SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son’s successor. Reports claim Misra is among at least three senior executives who could succeed Son when he steps down. Misra took over as CEO of the $100-billion Vision Fund earlier in 2016.
Infosys completes its acquisition of WongDoody
The country’s second-largest IT services firm Infosys has completed the acquisition of US-based WongDoody. WongDoody Holding Company is a US-based digital creative and consumer insights agency. WongDoody has clients across industries like telecommunications, consumer electronics, healthcare and consumer packaged goods. WongDoody is headquartered in Seattle and has an office in Los Angeles.

Vikas Gowda, top Indian discus thrower retires
Famous Indian discus thrower Vikas Gowda retired after competing at the highest level for more than 15 years. Gowda, who holds the national record of 66.28m, is one of the most decorated Indian athletes, having won a gold in the 2013 and 2015 Asian Championships. Awarded the Padma Shri in 2017, Gowda became the second Indian in 56 years to win an athletics gold at the CWG.
Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan recognized at CEAT Cricket Rating awards
India skipper Virat Kohli won the International Cricketer of the Year Award at the CEAT Cricket Rating awards. Opener Shikhar Dhawan was presented the International Batsman of the Year Award, while New Zealand’s Trent Boult won International Bowler of the Year Award. Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan was presented with the T20 Bowler of the Year Award.
